In Memory of Rutlands Baby Joey

Joey passed away May 5 2016, he was just one week shy of his 13th Birthday. Joey was a part of my home, my life and my heart. He is missed by all of our staff and all that came to know him.

Joey was originally imported from Australia as a puppy by Curtis Rist of Hudson Labradoodles. At age 9 he came to California to live in my home, he was co-owned briefly with Golden Gate Labradoodles.

Joey was one of the most amazing dogs I have ever known, he had strong connections to people and his intuitive and responsiveness to all situations was always spot on. He knew exactly how to manipulate his people to get what he wanted, whether it be a belly rub, or a special treat. We kept special boxes of treats just for him to entice him to go where we wanted him to go, like the bath tub or outside or just move out of the way. Joey knew all the tricks.

Joey would use all of his special tricks on the visitors, our staff would take bets on how long it would take for him to get the children and adults alike to bend down and rub his belly. He would size up his visitors and went to work right away with success every time. Joey was always the big goofy dog that everyone wanted to take home or have one just like him.

Joey had a special spot in the kitchen, he would be found keeping a close eye on the oven and the treasures it held. He would wait patiently for hours as the smells of the treasures inside the oven rose and filled the house. Joey’s favorite was Turkey he could not hardly contain himself when one was roasting in the oven. When the treasures were removed from the oven he would proceed to licking his chops as it sat an cooled on top of the stove. He knew his patients would pay off and yield him a special treat for dinner. After all you could not resist his charm and tactics nor miss his 70 pounds lying in the middle of the kitchen.

Joey loved to carry things in his mouth and he loved a game of fetch, his favorite outings were the beach or park where he could run and romp freely always staying close by and checking in with his person. Joey enjoyed being groomed and would lay flat out on his side and fall asleep as he was brushed and trimmed. We would just roll him over to complete the other side. He was very proud of his long flowing coat.

Joey was amazing with young dogs and puppies allowing them to crawl all over him and chew on every part of his being, the scene was such a joy to watch. The young were totally enamored with him, followed him everywhere and they would mimic his behavior. He knew how to love life and enjoyed it to the fullest.

Joey’s history includes some of the oldest well known and best of the Australian Labradoodle service and therapy lines. He produced many many outstanding puppies with outstanding temperaments that have gone on to improve the overall breed as well as become working service and therapy dogs.

We are proud to have him carry on through his offspring and grand offspring, there is no other dog like him other than his offspring.

Joey will continue to improve the breed and leave his mark long after his absence.
